Practice Rules

PRACTICE

We do not have a required number of practices that the swimmers must attend during the week or month for the age group swimmers. Senior swimmers are expected to attend 80% of practice sessions a month including any dry land activities. However, we do want swimmers to keep a good attendance record, especially if they plan on improving. Improvement in swimming is directly related to your attendance and effort.

We do understand that kids and parents have busy schedules. Please let us know if there are certain days that your child may be regularly missing during the week. There is a practice schedule poster on the bulletin board outside of the coach’s office. The schedule is subject to change at any time, although we do our best to keep it the same. The times may change from season to season, so it is the responsibility of the swimmer to check the bulletin board for changes to the schedule daily.

Please be sure your swimmer(s) is/are on time for practice. If they are arriving late or will be getting out early, we will need a parent to come out on deck or a parent phone call confirming this. A written note is not acceptable. Swimmers are expected to be ready to swim and behind their lanes at the designated start time. Changing and other preparations need to be done before practice starts.

The locker rooms are available for the swimmers to change quickly before practice. Please remind your swimmers that the locker room is not the property of the swim team and all personal items must be inside a locker or on the deck of the pool, no exceptions. The country club provides towels for its members, not for MVAC. Please bring your own towels to practice, member and non-member alike.

Swimmers are expected to fully participate in practice. If there is excessive sitting out, the swimmer will be given the option of continuing to swim or getting out. Parents will be contacted if the swimmer gets out for this reason. MVAC’s workouts are not as long as some other teams. We rely on intensity during practice. Sitting out during practice is counter to that philosophy.

No swimmer shall interfere with the progress of other swimmers either in or out of the pool. They will be dealt with outside of practice.

CONDUCT

Inappropriate language and behavior will not be tolerated during practice or at any other time by a member of MVAC. Abusive language is unnecessary, offensive and does not belong at the pool, on deck, in the locker room or at meets. A swimmer will be asked to leave if this type of language is heard by one of the coaches or swimmers. If this type of language is persistent, we will have to consider the swimmer’s status on the team.

Respect is required and expected for other swimmers, coaches and the facility. No exceptions.

MVAC Team Practice Rules :

  1. All equipment must be behind your lane and within reaching distance at every practice. See the equipment list.
    • This will enable all of us to have a more efficient practice and one without needless interruptions while athletes take the time to go get their equipment.
  2. Arriving on time to practice means arriving 15 minutes early, ready to stretch and then get in the water promptly at the start of practice.
    • Arriving on time and ready to stretch and swim is key to utilizing all of our available practice time.
  3. Parent observation is more then welcome during practice, as long as the parent does not interrupt practice by talking to swimmer or coach during practice.
    • Talking to a swimmer or coach during practice distracts either the swimmer or coach from utilizing their full attention and efforts.
  4. The group we put your child in is due to their ability to keep up with that group’s practice. Switching groups for convenience will not be allowed.
    • Switching groups to accommodate your schedule, affects the performance of the entire group. In order to move up a group, the athlete needs to have achieved the qualifying times, successfully completed the new group’s test workout, and/or have both coaches approval.
  5. Strict adherence to MVAC and MVCC’s ‘Code of Conduct’ must be maintained.
    • We wish to have a polite and respectful team on deck and in the water. This facilitates team bonding, mutual respect for fellow swimmers, coaches, staff, and parents. Dealing with discipline issues takes time away from instruction.
  6. Any swim suit may be worn during practice. Team racing suits and caps are not required.
  7. Non-member parents are allowed to sit on the bleachers during practice.
    • MVCC is a private country club and we must do our best to not inconvenience members of the country club.
  8. No Food may be brought on property. One bottle of water or sports drink may be allowed. MVCC has a snack shop that will be open during practices.
  9. Use of Locker Rooms is for changing and restroom use only. No loitering or storing personal items will be tolerated with the exception of members of the country club.
  10. Swimmers will put their personal items on the bleachers provided for their use.
  11. All trash and equipment must be put away / removed from the deck at the conclusion of each practice.
  12. A swimmer must pay attention and give their best effort during practice. No sitting on the walls.
    • Coaches know when a swimmer is giving a sub-par performance in practice. If a swimmer cannot practice to race, they should probably be getting rest and healing at home instead.
    • Sitting on the wall during practice provides unnecessary distractions for the coach and the rest of the team. This will not be tolerated. A swimmer will be asked 3 times and then asked to get out of practice for the day. Repeated offenses will be brought to the parent’s attention for further action.
